First Local Meal

One meal down, lots more to go! Cube Steak from Northwind farms, Mushrooms from a farm in Eaton, Yukon Gold potatos, and roasted beets from a local organic farmer in Oregon, WI. Everything was purchased from our local farmers market in Madison. Yummy! Butter was also from WI, but I can't remember who I purchased it from. Non-local ingredients were wortcheshire, olive oil and salt. I don't think the picture is working here, but you can see the food plated up at the Flickr group. If anyone knows where to purchase local milk in the Dane County WI area, I would love to know!

Eat Local Challenge

Good Morning!

I joined Pocket Farm's Eat Local Challenge. That means I have to make 1 dinner each week from local foods. I can't wait for this new challenge. Luckily the farmers markets here are picking up in their selection of available produce. Most likely I will make my dinner each Saturday evening.

Where'd my week go?

Geeesh, it's Monday again. I wish that wouldn't happen. Oh well. Here's a recap of my week. It was hot, hot, hot here in my world. Positives: #1: Even though it was in the high eighties the majority of the week, I DID NOT use my Air conditioning. Instead, I used my cieling fan in the bedroom at night, windows and blinds were closed during the day, and the dehumidifier was plugged in when all the windows were closed and ran the furnace fan when the air needed circulation in the house. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It helped that the humidity was way low. I'm not sure I could tolerate the humidity as well. #2: I didn't drive at all or spend any money on Sunday. #3: The majority of the food for the week was purchased at the local farmers market. I only had to buy rice and a can of tuna from whole foods. #4: So far all the veggies in my garden are still alive, although the green beans, water melon, and midget melon are struggling. #5: I am getting better about saving my water from kitchen sink, while I run it for hot water. I started saving water from my shower this morning. #6: I did not use the dryer once this week, everything has been line dried. I also am trying to be better about hanging clothes up and washing only things that need to be washed to cut down on the number of loads of laundry I do. #6: I ordered and received my DIVA Cup. #7: Create healthy add-ons for the heathens meals, so they are not so dependent on dry dog food.

Needs some work: #1: I broke my self imposed ban on TV. It just seemed to hot to do anything but sit in the cool basement and veg. I still unplug the TV/VCR every night. #2: Putting laundry away as soon as it's done, If I did this, I wouldn't feel like I needed to rewash things because they fall on the floor or one of the heathens decides to make that his bed. #3: I didn't mow the lawn. Really this needs to be done. #4: I need to make some reuseable bags to put produce in at the farmers market. My main bag is cloth, but I definately need some for things like strawberries and mushrooms and salad.

This weeks goals:
#1: Hanky instead of Kleenex
#2: Make and use produce bags
#3: Make my own TP
#4: Collect shower water
#5: Stay in budget!

Living within my means

Hello my name is Jennifer and I love my credit and debit cards and checks. But as of yesterday, they are no longer in my possesion. I didn't shred them, didn't throw them out, didn't give them away. At 12:36 PM the kindly banker, put my safety deposit box down and before I could run from the vault screaming, NO, NO, NO, YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM!!!, I shoved the beloveded cards in the box and stepped from the vault. Do you still hear me sobbing? Okay, so I wasn't sobbing, but it was close. They had to go away. While yes technically I still have access to them if needed, the bank is 40 minutes from my house and has traditional banker hours, so it's only open while I'm at work and since I just can't leave work willy nilly, it's a nice compromise.

I had my first test of living with out the easy access yesterday. I planned my expenses (gas and dog food) for the day. I took out the appropriate amount of cash from the bank and off I went. $10 in gas, paid for in Cash, so far so good right? Next stop, pet store, the heathens need their food, without it they get annoying. Cash in hand, you bet, I planned for it didn't I. $51.06 Please, the lovely cashier says, I kinda look at her funny, that can't be right, the last time I bought doggie food it was only $48 and some change. $50 should of been plenty. No problem I think, I'll just pay cash for the additional $1.06 on the debit card. Ummmm, CRAP, I DON'T HAVE A DEBIT CARD ANYMORE, remember, I just came from the bank where the kindly banker LOCKED IT AWAY in the vault. Okay, I say, could you give me a couple of minutes, I'll go search my car for loose change. 5 minutes later I have an additional 98 cents. Okay, maybe they have a penny thing at the register. Remeber I have heathens at home requiring food, I can't leave the store without it! Now even more embarrasing is that apparently the cashier has shared my predicament with another customer, so as I am scrounging and praying for those last few pennies, I hear, "Don't worry about it honey, I'll cover you." Oh my, a very nice samaritan. Instantly I am a lobster, I stammer, "I only need to find one more dime and I should be good." How embarrasing, I say Thank you about a million times and run from the store where I will never return.

I can hear you all saying, don't you work at a bank, can't you just get more money from the bank. Well yes, I do work at a bank, 3 afternoons a week, but see you have to have money in the account to actually withdraw money, they don't just give it to me because I ask for it. My bank account there is only for my weekly money. Let me tell you about my weekly money.

Every Friday, assuming I remember to transfer the money in, I receive $45 in that account. That $45 is broken into $15 gas, $25 Food, $5 fun or projects. Pop all your eyes back into your heads, what you read is correct. That's why I love my credit cards. No more, I will finish all my projects that I currenlty have languishing throughout my house. That will be my entertainment. I know, I know, you have more questions, but really I am now depressed after seeing it in writing again. So, until later.
